Q: 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback makes a lot of noise near the hatch?
Hi, my 1991 Honda Civic Hatchback is making a lot of noise near the hatch area. Now I'm not to sure if it's the shocks/struts of the actual hatch itself. Whenever I drive down a bumpy road there will be loud hard bangs coming from behind. Any and all help would be highly appreciated, thanks!

A: Have someone check the rear struts, trailing arm bushings,tail/muffler hangers, or what ever it is that's in your spare tire compartment. Any of these could cause the noises your referring to. Good luck and hope this helps.

Q: How to replace 1991 honda civic dx speakers?
how do i replace the speaker in my 1991 honda civic dx??

A: Remove the bolts/screws that hold the old ones in place, replace with the new ones and put the bolts/screws back in.

Q: Can i put a Armrest in my 1991 Honda civic hatchback?
I have a 1991 Honda civic hatchback and it stock does not come with a armrest and i would really like one. is there any way i can put a arm rest in the car?

A: Yes the 94-00 Acura Integra center console fits so perfectly it looks OEM, but it requires the slightest bit of DIY (Do-It-Yourself). http://fourthgenhatch.net/integraconsole.html If your not into the custom scene then you can just get the stock 88-91 Civic center console and then try to get he optional armrest which is kind of rare to find.

Q: 1991 honda civic engine slows when headlights turned on?
hi 1991 honda civic engine slows down when i turn on the head lights ? is there any thing serious with it.. i recently changed the batteries, bulb's and radiator on the car.. i bought this car recently from a dealer for kbb value .. if take this car to a mechanic how much would i be charged?

A: Don't take it to a mechanic for that. The idle needle valve is just a bit far open or there is a small vacuum leak that is making the idle slightly above the correct cold idle setting, about 700 rpm. That prevents the Idle Air Control valve from doing anything - it stays closed - and the extra drag of the alternator when you turn the lights on slows the engine. My money is on a vacuum leak, and the intake manifold gasket is top of the list. As long as you don't have more distressing symptoms (very high idle, idle "hunting") there is really nothing worth doing with it.

Q: Rims from a 1988 Dodge Omni fit a 1991 Honda Civic?
My car is a 1991 Honda Civic DX Hatchback 1.5L. I found a good price on craigslist for 4 good used tires on 4 bolt rims that were on a 1988 Dodge Omni. Will these rims fit on my civic?? thanks Does that mean they will or wont fit?

A: they possibly could, the civic's bolt pattern is 4x100mm if the dodge omni is a similar pattern like i saw on this site then possibly yes. http://www.volksrods.com/bolt_pattern_reference.htm

A: The car is running rich, too much fuel, not enough air. It likely needs professional diagnosis.

Q: How much would a 1.6L engine from a 1991 Honda Civic DX with about 160Kmi on it usually go for?
At this point I'm planning on parting out my old Civic but am not sure on the value of the engine.

A: $1500

Q: What type of manual transmission oil does a 1991 Honda civic use?
The oil can be for the years '91-2000 or for a Honda Accord.

A: The 1991 Civic manual states put 10w-40 in your transmission, but that's way before Honda release their new Manual Transmission Fluid. So I would recommend using Honda Brand MTF. Also, a lot of Honda guys are having success using GM Synchromesh in their manual transmissions, and that's what I am currently using in my 1991 Civic CRX Si.

Q: How could I convert my 1991 LX Honda Civic to Bio Diesel?
How easy would it be to convert my 1991 LX Honda Civic to bio diesel? Also, what materials would I need to complete this task and at what kind of cost?

A: You would need to replace your gas engine with a diesel engine first.

Q: the brakes on a 1991 honda civic si?
Hi everyone, I am planning on buying a 1991 honda civic si hatchback, but there are a couple of questions I have, These would be best for owners to answer but I will look through all the answers but, does it have rear disk brakes as I heard only came on the SI, and JDM Sir, and secondly I also heard it came with A/C, do they have these features?

A: Actually, a 1991 Civic Si comes with 4 wheel disc brakes. In fact, back then, only the EX 4door and the Si came with 4 wheel discs here in the States. No Honda came standard with A/C in 1991. Even the fully loaded Civic EX didn't come with A/C. It was an option. Luckily most people opted for it so it's quite common. However, age and care dictates a lot on whether or not the A/C works. By now, the A/C should've been replaced if it's working at all. Honda no longer sells the A/C for this model but there are aftermarket outfitters that you can get replacement parts from. Any mechanic can do it for you. I love those cars. They are very reliable(if they haven't been raced). By the way, no pre-1992 Civic Si has power steering if it matters.

Q: How can i make a 1991 Honda Civic LX into a street legal dune buggy type vehicle?
I really want to cut down the body and add some bigger tires and suspension and things like that. But I am not sure of what is legal, and what i need and do not need on the car. So if you have any information or can direct me to a website to help me out that would be great.

A: The car being a FWD car is a minus. Honestly, it's possible to make it into a badass little toy but as for it being street legal it's not worth it. Really if you want a cheap little toy that you wouldn't mind getting dirty, I'd get a VW baja bug. I love seeing them run the races in the desert. The motors can be dropped out and put back in really quick and parts are cheap. Other than that, don't ever let someone tell you that it's impossible to do anything. Everything is possible when your a fabricator. If you decide to build your civic, I wish you luck.

Q: Is a 1991 Honda civic crx si a good basic car for racing? And to eventually mod?
I wanted a small low weight car where i still liked the style, and wasn't ungodly expensive. Thanks for the info.

A: Yes, these are great cars to race and mod. What kind of racing will you be doing? The Honda CRX is extremely light. With just a couple hundred horsepower, you can have a very fast car. They are somewhat easy to work with due to being an older model (less wiring, safety stuff, etc). And with some know how, you can virtually put any engine swap you want to in that car. Yes, there is a V8 Honda CRX that is a beast, but it's been done. Common swaps for the CRX are the 92-95 D16z6 which is a US engine that was available in the 92-95 Civic EX and Civic Si. Also you can do a 96-00 Civic EX which is a D16y8. Other swaps are b-series. B18A1 from the 90-93 Integra, B18B(1) from the 94-01 Integra LS/GS, B18C(1) from the 94-01 Integra GSR, B16A3 from the 92-96 Del Sol VTec, B16A2 from the 99-00 Civic Si. There are also JDM motors available from Japan. There are endless options for modifying a HOnda Crx. Great cars for daily drivers, great cars for racing. Good Luck with your build.

Q: 1991 Honda Civic LX, What type of engines do these have?
Need to know what type of honda engine they have and if you want to help out even a little bit more, what type of engine swaps are they compatible for? Thanks :)

A: the lx is the 4th generation civic, (EF) and ignore matt, don't know why these people bother answering, nothing better to do.... the engine depends on spec and region, by lx i'll assume you live in america, where the 4th gen was quite limited, japan and europe had a wider range of performance levels. the base model has a 1.2 SOHC carburetor engine, (JDM only). they came with a 1.3 (d13b), a 1.4 (d14a), 1.5 (d15b) and the top US model, the Si came with the d16a6, a 1.6 SOHC. (106bhp). it had the d16z5 (130bhp) for the european market. the top model SiR in japan came with the 160bhp b16a engine, (labeled B16A2/A1 outside of japan). so it depends on your trim, if you have the B16A already (it would have to be an import) then stick with that, if not then you can swap a B16A2 strait in, (need to change gearbox, ECU, wiring loom aswell)but will be a fairly srait swap as they come standard with the car in JDM. for mental performance you could go for a B18C from a integra type-r, or the B18C1 (slightly less performance, USDM version) but will cost alot more and will be more work. with either of those power-weight means a fast car! not to mention, (Tim may want to read this) the B-series and K-series are some of the most tunable, high performing normally aspirated engines out there and can be faster than a ''big v8'' without forced induction. PS. matt, a 850kg car with a DOHC VTEC 160bhp engine wont be a slow piece of ****.

Q: 1991 honda civic-Check engine light is on-how do i check it?
1991 honda civic hatchback with auto trans and 1.6l FI 16 valve motor. when the gas pedal is suddenly depressed more than about 1/3 of the way the engine revs down and it bucks many times until the driver lets off. the check engine light is now on and i need a site detailing how to check it (i went to autozone and asked them but apparently this is one that requires a jumper wire or paperclip and as a result flashes a light a specific number of times). if someone could help me find such a site and or give me some ideas on whats wrong i would certainly appreciate it. (by the way, please dont respond with answers such as take it to a mechanic, or buy a code reader-because that is not what im asking). thanks!

A: check out this site.

Q: How do you Fix a CV joint in a 1991 Honda Civic?
I would like to know the procedure and if there is any danger in fixing it myself?

A: If you have sturdy jackstands, an impact wrench, ball-joint remover, and a torque wrench, you should be able to replace your axle with new CV joints without any problem. Buy a honda civic service manual for complete reference. Drain your transmission fluid. 1. loosen lug nuts to your wheel 2. lift the right side of your car onto jackstands 3. remove your wheel. 4. find the transmission drain plug and remove to begin draining onto a pan. Replace the axle. 1. loosen lug nuts to your wheel on the axle side you plan to replace 2. lift the car onto jackstands 3. remove your wheel. 4. remove pin and the castle nut beneath the lower joint. 5. release the lower ball joint from the lower arm by lifting the hub while wedging a fork ball joint remover between the lower ball joint and the lower arm. (may need 2 persons) 6. use the impact wrench to loosen the axle nut. 7. remove the bolts behind the hub connected to the fork. 8. slide the old axle out of the hub. 9. use a screwdriver to pry the other end of the axle out of the transmission. 10. slide the new axle with new CV joints into the transmission. (may require a little force to push the new axle into the transmission) Complete steps backward for reinstallation. * Don't forget to return/replace the pins. * Tighten your nuts/bolts back to torque specifications. * Don't forget to refill your transmission with new transmission oil. Use a transparent tube to get a better angle to the filler hole. Good luck!
